BioEssays published by WILEY Periodicals, Inc.BACKGROUND This study examined the prevalence of free-living Acanthamoeba in domestic tap water in the greater Sydney region, Australia, and determined any seasonal variation in prevalence. METHODS Fifty-four participants were included in this study following approval from an institutional human research ethics committee. Each participant self-collected two samples (one in summer and another in winter) from the surface of the drain of the bathroom sink using an instructional kit. The samples were cultured by inoculating onto a non-nutrient agar plate seeded with Escherichia coli and incubation at 32°C for two weeks. The plates were microscopically examined for the presence of free-living amoeba. DNA was isolated from 20 samples and a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay was performed for amplification of the partial sequence of the 18S ribosomal RNA gene. The PCR amplified products were sequenced using Sanger sequencing and genotyping was performed based on the variation in nucleotide sequences. In randomized trials, a difference of cause-specific CIFs (treatment minus control) represents a treatment effect. Cause-specific CIF in each intervention arm can be estimated based on the usual non-parametric Aalen-Johansen estimator which generalizes the Kaplan-Meier estimator of CIF in the presence of competing risks. Under random censoring, asymptotically valid Wald-type confidence intervals (CIs) for a difference of cause-specific CIFs at a specific time point can be constructed using one of the published variance estimators. Unfortunately, these intervals can suffer from substantial under-coverage when the outcome of interest is a rare event, as may be the case for example in the analysis of uncommon adverse events. We propose two new approximate interval estimators for a difference of cause-specific CIFs estimated in the presence of competing risks and random censoring. Theoretical analysis and simulations indicate that the new interval estimators are superior to the Wald CIs in the sense of avoiding substantial under-coverage with rare events, while being equivalent to the Wald CIs asymptotically. In the absence of censoring, one of the two proposed interval estimators reduces to the well-known Agresti-Caffo CI for a difference of two binomial parameters. KGaA, Weinheim.This study proposes to examine the phenomenology of home among 46 Israeli adults who had been deemed "at-risk children" and removed from their home by court order in their childhood on the grounds of parental mistreatments, such as abuse and neglect. For a comprehensive understanding of the long-term impact of out-of-home placement, adults of different ages were interviewed. The research findings reflect the close connection between home concept and self-concept, a long-standing internal dialectic between the home that did not exist and the home (as an internal-emotional space) that the adults would have liked to have. Furthermore, our findings reveal what we term the life career of the home concept, that is, the various diachronic phenomenological definitions that adults grant to the home-self in childhood, anchored in the family home, during their time in a residential care setting, their adolescence, and their adulthood. The discussion addresses the unique self-concept and home concept of care leavers. © 2020 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.BACKGROUND Despite being largely preventable, many occupational diseases continue to be highly prevalent and extremely costly. Effective strategies are required to reduce their human, economic, and social impacts. METHODS To better understand which approaches are most likely to lead to progress in preventing noise-related hearing loss, occupational contact dermatitis, occupational cancers, and occupational asthma, we undertook a scoping review and consulted with a number of key informants. RESULTS We examined a total of 404 articles and found that various types of interventions are reported to contribute to occupational disease prevention but each has its limitations and each is often insufficient on its own. Our principal findings included legislation and regulations can be an effective means of primary prevention, but their impact depends on both the nature of the regulations and the degree of enforcement; measures across the hierarchy of controls can reduce the risk of some of these diseases and reduce exposures; monitoring, surveillance, and screening are effective prevention tools and for evaluating the impact of legislative/policy change; the effect of education and training is context-dependent and influenced by the manner of delivery; and, multifaceted interventions are often more effective than ones consisting of a single activity. CONCLUSIONS This scoping review identifies occupational disease prevention strategies worthy of further exploration by decisionmakers and stakeholders and of future systematic evaluation by researchers. It also identified important gaps, including a lack of studies of precarious workers and the need for more studies that rigorously evaluate the effectiveness of interventions. © 2020 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.The rational design of theoretical minimal RNA rings predetermines AUG as the universal start codon. This design maximizes coded amino acid diversity over minimal sequence length, defining in silico theoretical minimal RNA rings, candidate ancestral genes. RNA rings code for 21 amino acids and a stop codon after three consecutive translation rounds, and form a degradation-delaying stem-loop hairpin.
