1. Birchen and Blue Leonesa are two endangered chicken breeds mainly raised in Curueño Valley in North Spain. The establishment of a germplasm bank to guarantee the preservation of these breeds is needed. However, cockerels from different breeder flocks can show variance in semen cryoresistance.2. The following work focused on the sperm characterisation and cryopreservation of Birchen and Blue Leonesa cockerels from four different breeders. A total of 30 semen pools were analysed. No significant differences were found among fresh semen variables between breeds and breeders. For post-thawed variables, significant differences (P less then 0.05) were found between breeders in sperm viability (58.0 ± 1.90 breeder D vs. 35.2 ± 7.41 breeder A, 37.2 ± 4.09 breeder B and 22.3 ± 5.92 breeder C) and DNA fragmentation (62.4 ± 9.91 breeder C vs. 31.8 ± 7.08 breeder B and 24.5 ± 5.49 breeder D). The lowest DNA fragmentation values for semen from breeder D birds were coincident with higher integrity of the mitochondrial membrane.4. The results revealed higher sperm cryoresistance in the cockerels from one of the breeders, possibly due to differences in management system (e.g. diet, housing, control of stress elements and pathogens, reproduction practices or maintenance of genetic diversity). These differences may determine the sperm freezability, and thus the effectiveness of developing a germplasm bank.Promoting evidence-based treatments and the human rights of people living with mental illness are the two pillars of Global Mental Health (GMH). Critics counter that human rights narratives must also include social justice frameworks. We draw on the cases of autism and ADHD in Brazil to discuss the role of human rights in mental health in the context of GMH. A human rights perspective involves citizenship rights for individuals living with mental distress and provides a framework to problematise the logic of GMH centred on individual rights and rights to treatment. We begin with an overview on human rights discussions in GMH and examine the introduction of human rights discourses in the Brazilian psychiatric reform. We then explore how autism and ADHD became priorities of GMH interventions as well as the constitution of two styles of activism and mobilisation of human rights around these conditions. One follows the universal public health logic and promotes health as a social right. The other follows the logic of parents' associations that redefined those conditions as forms of disability to advocate for specialised services and interventions. Finally, we discuss these forms of human rights mobilisation and their implications for Brazilian mental health and GMH.1. Myo-inositol (MI) is an essential metabolite for cell function in animals and humans. The aim of this study was to characterise the transport mechanism of MI in the small intestine of laying hens as there is a lack of knowledge about the MI uptake mechanisms. The hypothesised secondary active, cation coupled transport of MI was assessed by electrophysiological measurements with Ussing chambers, and was compared to the electrophysiology of glucose transport.2. Twenty-six laying hens were used. The potential ion-dependent transport was tested in tissue of the small intestine. Barrier function of the tissue was shown by determining the transepithelial resistance. During the experiments, mucosal and serosal buffers were sampled to measure time-dependent changes in MI concentrations. Samples from eight hens were further used for Western blot analyses of the jejunal apical membranes.3. Active MI transport, indicated by changes in the short circuit current after MI addition, could not be demonstrated in the Ussing chambers experiments. MI was further not detectable in the serosal buffer, nor in the lysates of mucosal tissue cytoplasm nor lipids. Thus, there was no evidence for a MI transport or absorption. However, Western blot analyses of the jejunal apical membrane revealed signals indicated the expression of the MI transport proteins SMIT-1 and SMIT-2.4. In conclusion, the MI transport process in the chicken intestine is more complex than it was presumed and is probably influenced by still unknown regulations or metabolic processes.This case controlled study measured the measles antibody titer in children who survived cancer after chemotherapy to determine the patient's immune status against the measles vaccine.We enrolled 38 children who were in complete remission and whose treatments had been stopped for at least 3 months and 38 age and sex-matched healthy controls. We analyzed the medical records of the cancer survivors, and each study participant's serum sample was analyzed by the ELISA method to determine the antibody titer against measles.The cancer survivors had significantly lower measles antibody titers than the healthy control participants, and 78.9% of cancer survivors were unprotected (seronegative) compared to 7.9% in healthy controls. After multivariate analysis, there was no statistically significant factor associated with loss of protective humoral immunity against measles.These results underline the need for post-chemotherapy measles antibody testing and revaccination of seronegative survivors. When acting effectively in their social change agent (SCA) role, occupational therapists can impact population health and occupational justice. However, empirical evidence of the influence of personal and environmental factors on their ability to act as SCAs is scarce. To explore personal and environmental factors that influence the ability of occupational therapists to act as effective SCAs. We conducted a descriptive interpretive qualitative study with 18 Québec occupational therapists recognized as successful SCAs. We collected data through semi-structured interviews with three focus groups and analyzed them thematically using a lexicon. We identified nine cross-cutting personal factors, including discovery, effective communication, and planning, that enable occupational therapists to act as successful SCAs. Six thematic groups of environmental factors facilitated or hindered their actions. To act effectively as SCAs, occupational therapists need to consider personal and environmental factors involved in their change project.
