The expressions of antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) in the larvae of the black soldier fly, Hermetia illucens, were significantly increased by pathogen or stimulant induced innate immunity activation. We immunized H. illucens fifth instar larvae with five different Lactobacillus species, that is, Lactobacillus acidophilus, L. brevis, L. casei, L. fermentum, or L. delbrueckii, to induce the mass production of AMPs and selected optimal immune inducers. Antimicrobial activities in hemolymph and H. illucens larvae (HIL) extract were evaluated against three salmonella species (Salmonella pullorum, Salmonella typhimurium, and Salmonella enteritidis). Highest antimicrobial activity was shown by the hemolymph of HIL immunized by L. casei and its activity was closely linked with the inductions of cecropin 1 (HiCec1) and defensin 1 (HiDef1) gene expressions. Furthermore, antimicrobial activity in hemolymph was stable to heat and pH and the growth of three Salmonella species were dramatically suppressed by HIL hemolymph and extract after immunization with L. casei. The minimal inhibitory concentration (MICs) of L. casei-immunized HIL extract against Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and Salmonella species ranged from 100~200 µg/100 µL and no cytotoxicity to CaCo-2 and L929 cells were observed in the concentration range 100~40,000 µg/100 µL. Taken together, the present investigation demonstrates that L. casei-immunized HIL extract is a powerful natural antibiotic and preservative that can prevent contamination by Salmonella species.The purpose was to examine the association of critical power from a three-minute all-out row (CP3-min) and peak power from a one-stroke maximum test (1-Stroke) with laboratory-based fitness assessments (peak oxygen consumption [V.O2peak] and Wingate anaerobic test [WAnT]) and 6000 m (6K) and 2000 m (2K) rowing ergometer performance. Thirty-one female collegiate rowers (20.2 ± 1.1 years, 70.9 ± 6.9 kg, and 172.2 ± 4.8 cm) participated in fitness and rowing performance testing. Pearson's correlations, linear regression, and Cohen's q were used to determine statistical relationships. Absolute V.O2peak values displayed significant correlations with 6Ktotal (-0.68), 6Ksplit (-0.68), 2Ktotal (-0.64), and 2Ksplit (-0.43). Relative V.O2peak displayed significant correlations with 6Ktotal (-0.36), and 6Ksplit (-0.37). CP3-min demonstrated significant correlations with 6Ktotal (-0.62), 6Ksplit (-0.62), 2Ktotal (-0.61), and 2Ksplit (-0.99). For 2Ksplit, a significant difference was observed between relative V.O2peak and CP3-min correlations with a "large" effect size (q = 2.367). Furthermore, 1-Stroke showed significant associations with 6Ktotal (-0.63), 6Ksplit (-0.63), 2Ktotal (-0.62), and 2Ksplit (-0.44), while WAnT produced non-significant correlations. Absolute V.O2peak CP3-min accounted for significant proportions of variance observed with performance measures (p less then 0.05). Practitioners should consider incorporating CP3-min and 1-Stroke as additional tests for gauging rowing performance.Although the high-speed polishing technology has been widely applied to obtain an ultra-smooth surface in the field of spherical optical manufacture, it is still mainly used in small-size or easily polished lenses. In the infrared optical system, large-size silicon lenses are often used to increase the luminous flux. As is known, the material is hard-polished, it is time-consuming to reduce the surface roughness by iterative polishing and it is difficult to avoid the form accuracy getting worse. To produce an ultra-smooth surface efficiently without destroying the figure, a scientific understanding of material removal in the high-speed polishing process is necessary, which would lead to the process being more deterministic. In this paper, a mathematical model of material removal is developed based on the classic Preston equation. The predicted results of the proposed model show good agreement with the experimental data. Further, a method to achieve uniform polishing can be addressed with a systematic analysis of the key factors affecting material removal and their contribution to spatial non-uniform removal. Finally, the experimental results indicate that the surface roughness of hard-polished spherical optics can be improved efficiently using the uniform polishing method without the surface figure being destroyed.Tick-Borne Encephalitis Virus (TBEV) is a dangerous arbovirus widely distributed in Northern Eurasia. The area of this pathogen changes over time. At the beginning of the 2000s, the Ixodes tick populations in Karelia increased. At the same time, the area of I. persulcatus, the main vector of the Siberian TBEV subtype, also expanded. Herein, we sequenced 10 viruses isolated from ticks collected in three locations from the Karelia region in 2008-2018. PCR positive samples were passaged in suckling mice or pig embryo kidney cells (PEK). After the second passage in suckling, mice viral RNA was isolated and E-gene fragment was sequenced. Viral sequences were expected to be similar or nearly identical. Instead, there was up to a 4.8% difference in nucleotide sequence, comparable with the most diverse viruses belonging to the Baltic subgroup in Siberian TBEV subtype (Baltic TBEV-Sib). To reveal whether this was systemic or incidental, a comprehensive phylogeographical analysis was conducted. Interestingly, viruses within each geographic region demonstrated comparable diversity to the whole Baltic TBEV-Sib.
