Cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) are the focus of significant attention in the broad area of sustainable technologies for possessing many desirable properties such as a large surface area, high strength and stiffness, outstanding colloidal stability, excellent biocompatibility and biodegradability, low weight and abundance in nature. Yet, a fundamental understanding of the micro- and nanoscale electrical charge distribution on nanocellulose still remains elusive. Here we present direct quantification and mapping of surface charges on CNCs at ambient condition using advanced surface probe microscopy techniques such as Kelvin probe force microscopy (KPFM), electrostatic force microscopy (EFM) and force-distance (F-D) curve measurements. We show by EFM measurements that the surface charge in the solid-state (as contrasted with liquid dispersions) present at ambient condition on CNCs provided by Innotech Alberta is intrinsically negative and the charge density is estimated to be 13 μC/cm2. These charges also result in CNCs having two times the adhesive force exhibited by SiO2 substrates in adhesion mapping studies. The origin of negative surface charge is likely due to the formation of CNCs through sulfuric acid hydrolysis where sulfate half esters groups remained on the surface (Johnston et al., 2018). A total of 392 adult patients with chronic Chagas disease (59% women; mean age, 53±11years) who underwent echocardiography were consecutively enrolled in this prospective longitudinal study. Echocardiographic evaluation included two-dimensional (2D) Doppler echocardiography, with evaluation of left ventricular systolic and diastolic function, LA size, and LA and left ventricular function on 3DE and ε analyses. We sought to assess the incremental prognostic value of serial combined speckle-tracking examination of right chambers in newly diagnosed therapy-naïve PAH patients. The study endpoint was a composite of all-cause mortality, hospitalizations due to worsening PAH, and initiation of parenteral prostanoids. Patients were assessed at baseline and at first revaluation after initiation of treatment. Right ventricular free-wall longitudinal strain (FWLS) and RA peak atrial longitudinal strain (PALS) were used as measures of RV and RA function. Eighty-three patients were included. The clinicopathological characteristics and treatment strategies for PLN metastasis from OSCC need to be comprehensively elucidated. A retrospective review of OSCC patients who experienced postoperative PLN metastasis in our department between 2000 and 2018 was performed in this study. A total of 47 OSCC patients with postoperative PLN metastasis were identified. PLN with metastasis were divided into three groups based on the location parotid tail (PLN-t), superficial lobe (PLN-sl), and deep lobe (PLN-dl). Most of the patients experienced PLN metastasis within less than 12 months after the primary surgery for OSCC. Comparatively, patients with PLN-sl metastasis were more prone to have infiltration of the facial nerve. The tongue and buccal mucosa were the most frequent primary sites associated with PLN metastasis from OSCC. PLNs in the parotid tail were most commonly affected by the metastasized OSCC. Consequently, we recommend a series of strategies for the prevention and treatment of PLN metastasis for OSCC patients. In conclusion, PLNs should not be overlooked during preoperative evaluation and postoperative follow-up examinations for OSCC patients. To examine intraindividual changes in fecal microbiome and metabolites among patients undergoing Roux-en-Y gastric bypass or vertical sleeve gastrectomy. Observational study. Twenty patients were enrolled and provided stool samples before and 1 week, 1 month, and/or 3 months after surgery. Shallow shotgun metagenomics and untargeted fecal metabolomics were performed. Zero-inflated generalized additive models and linear mixed models were applied to identify fecal microbiome and metabolites changes, with adjustment for potential confounders and correction for multiple testing. We enrolled 16 women and 4 men, including 16 white and 4 black participants (median age = 45 years; presurgery body mass index = 47.7 kg/m ). Ten patients had Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, 10 had vertical sleeve gastrectomy, and 14 patients provided postsurgery stool samples. Of 47 samples, median sequencing depth was 6.3 million reads and 1073 metabolites were identified.
