This cohort study aimed to characterize the oral microbiome of children with CLP, from two different age groups, and evaluate the effect of supervised or unsupervised toothbrushing on the microbiome of the cleft over time. Swab samples were collected from the cleft area at three different time points (A; no brushing, B; after 15 days and C; after 30 days) and were analyzed using next-generation sequencing to determine the microbial composition and diversity in these time points. Overall, brushing significantly decreased the abundance of the genera Alloprevotella and Leptotrichia in the two age groups examined, and for Alloprevotella this decrease was more evident for children (2-6 years old). In the preteen group (7-12 years old), a significant relative increase of the genus Rothia was observed after brushing. In this study, the systematic brushing over a period of thirty days also resulted in differences at the intra-individual bacterial richness. The risks associated with direct health spending are high in Cameroon, where almost all household income is spent on health care. Moreover, there is no real social security in Cameroon because of the lack of a universal social protection system. This study aimed to assess the willingness of Cameroonian urban dwellers to subscribe and the amount to pay for voluntary (VCHI) or compulsory community-based health insurance (CCHI). A cross-sectional study based on a three-stage stratified cluster random sampling design using a bidding game style based on the contingent valuation approach was performed to in the two largest urban areas of Cameroon (Douala and Yaoundé) evaluate the willingness to pay for the VCHI and CCHI. The results shown that 46% of respondent were willing to join the CCHI and 41% for VCHI. Furthermore, household income, working sector, chronic disease, health priority, and family size were factors mostly associated (p < 0.001) with the willingness to join CCHI or VCHI. Increase in household income has a positive effect on household's desire for both CCHI and VCHI. While for VCHI, increase of children number resulted in an increment of the premium, contrary to the occurrence of chronic ailment which led in the decrease of the bid. From the results, it is clear that city dwellers in Cameroon are ready to join and pay for community health insurance. This willingness was related to their financial power which resulted in an average insurance premium of 9.03 USD and 8.17 USD, respectively for CCHI and VCHI. That bid was found to be enough for an implementation of these types of health insurance in Cameroon. That bid was found to be enough for an implementation of these types of health insurance in Cameroon.The study presents a complete one-dimensional model to evaluate the parameters that describe the operation of a Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) electrolyzer and PEM fuel cell. The mathematical modeling is implemented in Matlab/Simulink® software to evaluate the influence of parameters such as temperature, pressure, and overpotentials on the overall performance. The models are further merged into an integrated electrolyzer-fuel cell system for electrical power generation. The operational description of the integrated system focuses on estimating the overall efficiency as a novel indicator. Additionally, the study presents an economic assessment to evaluate the cost-effectiveness based on different economic metrics such as capital cost, electricity cost, and payback period. The parametric analysis showed that as the temperature rises from 30 to 70 °C in both devices, the efficiency is improved between 5-20%. In contrast, pressure differences feature less relevance on the overall performance. Ohmic and activation overpotentials are highlighted for the highest impact on the generated and required voltage. Overall, the current density exhibited an inverse relation with the efficiency of both devices. The economic evaluation revealed that the integrated system can operate at variable load conditions while maintaining an electricity cost between 0.3-0.45 $/kWh. Also, the capital cost can be reduced up to 25% while operating at a low current density and maximum temperature. The payback period varies between 6-10 years for an operational temperature of 70 °C, which reinforces the viability of the system. Overall, hydrogen-powered systems stand as a promising technology to overcome energy transition as they provide robust operation from both energetic and economic viewpoints.Large quantities of earth materials are consumed daily in Mashau Village; nonetheless, this practice had not been studied. Furthermore, the motivations for this geophagic behaviour in the study area were unclear. Thus, questionnaires were distributed to 200 participants in the study area with the aim of generating data on the motivations of and potential medical conditions associated to this practice. About 91% of the participants were geophagists, of which 98.5% were female. Craving was found to be the main reason (73.9%) why people of the Mashau communities consume soil. Soil characterisation and beneficiation for healthy geophagic practices should also be carried out at Mashau Village.In order to optimize the survival rate of animals, the purpose of this study was to evaluate an injectable anesthesia protocol for the development of a murine model of hepatic cystic echinococcosis in female CF-1 mice. Three protocols of injectable anesthesia were evaluated during the infection of mice with Echinococcus granulosus sensu lato protoscoleces via the portal vein. The use or not of pre-anesthesia [atropine (0.4 mg/kg) and tramadol (2 mg/kg)] and the incorporation or not of yohimbine (0.5 mg/kg) (a reverser of xylazine) in mice anesthetized with ketamine/xylazine 80/8 mg/kg were evaluated. Most mice treated only with ketamine/xylazine 80/8 mg/kg did not achieve a deep surgical anesthetic plane. All mice treated with pre-anesthetic drugs achieved a deep surgical anesthetic plane after the administration of the anesthetic cocktail. Pre-anesthetic drugs application significantly reduced time induction of animals compared with those that received only anesthetic cocktail. Recovery time was significantly faster in the group that received yohimbine.
