Reduced muscle mass represents one of the top ranked phenotypic criteria for malnutrition proposed by the Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition. Although height-indexed fat-free mass (FFMI) thresholds have been proposed as useful surrogate measures of reduced muscle mass, the independent prognostic value of BIA-derived FFMI by bioelectric impedance analysis (BIA) in patients with cancer still needs to be fully explored. Data on body mass index (BMI), 6-month percentage of weight loss (%WL), FFMI by BIA and quality of life (QoL by EORTC Quality of Life Questionnaire [EORTC QLQ-C30]) of Italian and German patients observed prospectively until death or censoring were used (N=1217). Sarcopenia is characterized by loss of skeletal muscle mass and associated with poor postoperative outcomes. This study aimed to investigate the prognostic value of preoperative albumin-globulin score (AGS), skeletal muscle index (SMI) as well as their combination in patients with intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC) treated with surgical resection. A total of 613 newly diagnosed ICC patients from two centers were retrospectively analyzed (460 in discovery cohort and 153 in validation cohort). The plain computed tomography images were used to measure SMI. The effect of AGS, SMI and CAS grade on clinicopathological characteristics and long-term outcomes of patients with ICC were analyzed. The SMI was significantly greater in males than in females. Patients with decreased AGS, increased SMI were associated with improved overall survival (OS) and recurrence-free survival (RFS). Our objective was to estimate the association between the quality of dietary carbohydrates and subclinical atherosclerosis in femoral and carotid arteries. Cross-sectional study of femoral and carotid atherosclerosis assessed using ultrasounds of 2074 middle-aged males, 50.9 (SD 3.9) years old, with no previous CVD, and pertaining to the Aragon Workers' Health Study (AWHS) cohort. Food frequency questionnaires were used to calculate a carbohydrate quality index (CQI) defined as consumption of dietary fiber, a lower glycemic index, the ratio of whole grains/total grains, and the ratio of solid carbohydrates/total carbohydrates. The presence of plaques across four CQI intervals was studied using adjusted logistic regression models. The CQI showed emoral artery subclinical atherosclerosis when compared with a lower consumption. The aim of this study was to explore the changes in energy, protein, and other nutrient intakes between 2007 and 2017-8 in two cross-sectional samples of older long-term care residents in the Helsinki metropolitan area. We also studied how the residents' disability and stage of cognition modified the association between observation year and protein intake (g/body weight kg). Two cross-sectional samples were collected in 2007 (n=350) and 2017-8 (n=476) in long-term care settings. Residents' nutrient intake was determined by a one- or two-day food record. Residents' disability was determined by the Clinical Dementia Rating (CDR) "personal care" question and stage of cognition was determined by the CDR "memory" item. There was no significant difference in energy intake between the observation years. Carbohydrates, total protein, and protein (g/body weight kg) intakes were significantly loweon years, the ratio of macronutrient intake changed in an unfavorable way. The intake of protein and some vitamins were lower whereas the relative proportion of fat was higher in 2017-8 compared to 2007. As long-term care residents become more disabled in the future, more attention should be paid to diet quality. The refeeding syndrome (RFS) has been recognized as a potentially life-threatening metabolic complication of re-nutrition, but the definition widely varies and, its incidence is unknown. The aim of this systematic review and meta-analyses was to estimate the incidence of RFS in adults by considering the definition used by the authors as well as the recent criteria proposed by the American Society of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (ASPEN) consensus. Furthermore, the incidence of refeeding hypophosphatemia (RH) was also assessed. Four databases were systematically searched until September 2020 for retrieving trials and observational studies. The incidences of RFS and RH were expressed as percentage and reported with 95% confidence intervals (CI). Thirty-five observational studies were included in the analysis. The risk of bias was serious in 16 studies and moderate in the remaining 19. The incidence of RFS varied from 0% to 62% across the studies. No substantial change in the originally reported incidence of RFS was found by applying the ASPEN criteria.
