We explored the perceptions of senior staff on becoming spoken up to into the running theatre (OT), and facets moderating their response. We undertook interviews and concentrate sets of totally skilled surgeons, anaesthetists, nurses, and anaesthetic specialists doing work in OTs across brand new Zealand. We used grounded concept to analyse and understand the data. With data from 79 participants, we conceptualise three stages within the talking up conversation 1) the content regarding the speaker's message in addition to tone of distribution; 2) the message translated through the receiver's filters, including values on personal fallibility and management, value for the speaker, understanding the difficulties of speaking up, and private cultural and expert norms around interaction; and 3) the receiver's subsequent reaction and its own effects regarding the presenter, the observing OT staff, and diligent attention. The speaking up discussion can be large stakes for your OT staff. The receiver reaction can strengthen group cohesion and function, or trigger stress and tension.
