The best chemotherapeutic regimen has yet to be defined.Chemical characterization of plastics ingested by wildlife helps identify sources of plastic pollution in nature and informs assessments of exposure risk to contaminants. In 2016, Red Phalaropes (Phalaropus fulicarius) were found dead on the north coast of British Columbia, Canada, during their southward migration. Previously, ingested particles suspected to be plastics were reported upon gut examination in all carcasses collected, which likely contributed to mortality. Here, we provide chemical identification of the ingested particles using Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. Polymer identification was successful for 41 of the 52 analysed particles (79%) 41 (79%) were confirmed as plastics, 6 (11%) were not plastics, and 5 (10%) could not be identified. The most commonly ingested plastics were polyethylene (42%) and polypropylene (23%), both of which are known to float in the marine environment. Our study highlights the vulnerability of surface foraging seabirds to plastic pollution in the marine environment.The increase of plastic production from the middle of the twentieth century was inevitably followed by an increase in the amount of plastic dumped in the natural environment. This review discusses the mechanism of plastics UV weathering and its characteristics. Comparison of the photodegradation rate and physico-chemical properties are made according to the weathering mode (natural/accelerated) and medium (air/water). Since the photodegradation can lead to plastics fragmentation, this phenomenon is described along with the methodologies used in literature to evaluate the fragmentation. However, the methodology is still having the limitations of susceptibility, indiscrimination, and complexity, etc. The objectives of this paper are to explore the effects of wavelength, temperature, H2O2 and NaCl addition, plastic property, and fluorescent index on the Nile red staining in microplastics analysis and propose solutions to these inadequacies. Sample co-stained with H2O2 (ωfinal = 10%) and NaCl (ωfinal = 8.8%) will lower the fluorescence intensity of biogenic materials and reduce their interferences. Based on the fluorescence color and intensity of fused fluorographs, the combined fluorescent index for twelve microplastics was significantly different, thus could be preliminarily distinguished. An elevated staining temperature is propitious to fluorescent tagging with Nile Red. Structures of three different chordate RAG recombinases, including protoRAG, and the evolutionarily preceding transib transposase have been determined in complex with various DNA substrates. Biochemical studies along with the abundant structural data have shed light on how RAG has evolved from an ordinary transposase to a specialized recombinase in initiating gene rearrangement. RAG has also become one of the best characterized RNH-type recombinases, illustrating how a single active site can cleave the two antiparallel DNA strands of a double helix. Spinal epidural arteriovenous fistulas (SEAVFs) are relative rare lesions. The pathogenesis of these fistulas remains unclear. Our aim is to review cases of SEAVFs at our institution. We reviewed a consecutive series of spinal vascular disease at our institution and collected all patients harboring SEAVFs. Medical charts were retrospectively reviewed regarding patient demographic data (i.e., gender and age), presenting symptoms and signs, previous history of spinal surgery or trauma, treatment methods, and neurological outcome after treatment. All image studies, including plain radiography, spinal MRI, MRA, and angiography were analyzed. We identified 9 cases of lumbosacral SEAVFs with intradural venous reflux treated at our institution from June 2010 to August 2020. Their median age was 67 years, range 52-83 years. Only one patient had a history of trauma. Interestingly, our observations found that all fistulas are associated with spinal stenosis and/or disc herniation. An additional literature search about SEAVFs coexisting with spinal stenosis and/or disc herniation was performed and found another 19 cases with median age 69 years, range 39-83 years.
